Work Experience for Young People with Special Needs

overhead-groupEach year we place students with special educational needs aged 16-19 in various sectors including catering and hospitality, public services, retail, horticulture and administration.

The skills these students have are often overlooked and can be valuable assets in the workplace. Some students can be particularly gifted in areas like data processing, IT, and repetitive hands-on tasks. Students demonstrate high levels of motivation and enthusiasm making them valued members of a team.

Placements are one to two week blocks or one day a week, giving students’ invaluable first-hand experience of the world of work. Students benefit hugely from the opportunity to be more independent, gaining in confidence and developing their communication and interpersonal skills.

This has been a new experience for me. I have also found working with the student very rewarding and this has expanded and challenged me as a person.

Businesses Benefit

When you offer a work experience placement to a young person with a learning or physical disability your business can contribute to meeting equal opportunities and diversity priorities. The process can positively challenge staff to be more empathetic and flexible in the way they work, developing their management and communication skills. These students have a lot to offer and based on their positive placement performance many go onto become volunteers and employees for their provider.

We will support your business every step of the way, by identifying suitable tasks for the student, monitoring student progress, and where appropriate school staff will attend with the student to help them adjust.
