When Northbank Business Improvement District offered their business partners the chance to support a careers and employability morning for Westminster young people, businesses jumped at the chance to raise students’ awareness of the diversity of companies within the area and inspire them about a wide range of careers.
ACCA, Corbin & King, Corinthia Hotel London, RNLI and RSA delivered interactive workshops to students from Westminster Kingsway College, City of Westminster College and St Augustine’s High School, focusing on jobs, recruitment processes into these roles and key skills that will make young people more employable.
Inspiring young people
Students gained valuable CV advice, practiced interview assessments such as selling objects, and used the Johari window technique to understand their own strengths and weaknesses. Following the event 98% of students learnt about different careers/jobs and the skills needed in the workplace and 95% gained a better understanding of recruitment methods.
The event also gave businesses the chance to build on their CSR activity and work with young people from local schools and colleges. 4 out of the 5 businesses felt the event was well organised and rated students’ engagement as excellent.
We have a wealth of businesses in our locality so it’s a great way of connecting young people with industries and career paths they may not be aware of. This event is also a great way to facilitate good CSR activity for our businesses, as they may not have had the chance to reach out to young people like this before.
